The Mindset Podcast – Episode 10

Do you ever have one of those mornings when your alarm goes off and you just want to hit the snooze button? It’s still dark outside, you’re tired, you don’t want to leave your warm bed, and maybe just 5 more minutes… Sounds familiar?

We’ve all been there!

We are not always motivated to go to work, to the gym, to work on our business, or to even get started with our day. Somedays, a simple thing like waking up feels like a struggle.

However, we still need to show up and do the things we don’t feel like doing, right?

In this episode of The Mindset Podcast, Greg and Steven share a trick on how to put yourself in action mode and get things done even when your motivation is nowhere to be found. The trick will work on people with competitive nature (and if you’re reading this blog, you’re most likely a competitive go-getter) and is so simple that you can start practicing it ASAP!

Steven shares a story about his friend Rex who has three children under the age of 4 and every morning he wakes up at 3:30, hits the gym, showers, and arrives first at work. When Steven asked him if he ever hits the snooze button, Rex said that the moment his alarm goes off, his feet hit the ground. How does he do it?

His first thought in the morning is that if he doesn’t get up, there’d be a guy in the gym, and then in the office, who’d be outworking him.

This way of thinking changes a lot if you want to be the one winning.

There’s always someone who can outwork you if you don’t give your best. Instead of thinking how much you’d like to keep sleeping when it’s time to get up, think about the person who will outwork you easily if you don’t do the things you should be doing. Shifting to that mindset will take a little bit of time but it will challenge the competitor in you and it’ll make it easier to divorce your excuses.

Hitting the snooze button might not feel like “a big deal” but the small daily actions you do shape your future and growth. Waking up when the alarm goes off, being consistent with your physical and mental training, avoiding distractions, and putting effort, are the elements that guarantee your success.

There’re people out there who are your competition in different areas of your life. Whether it’s work or sports, if you want to beat the competition, you should take action every day. These people might be underestimating you but it’s your job to prove them wrong. As Greg says, it can even be fun to be underestimated when you’ve been putting in the work in silence.

Another valuable point that Steven and Greg bring is that you shouldn’t rely on motivation to make your dreams come true. You won’t always have exciting days where you set records in training and business. However, you still need to show up for yourself and punch the clock. This is where discipline comes in. If there’s one quality that successful people all have in common, it is discipline.

Discipline is stronger than motivation and it’s the tool that bridges the gap between wishing and achieving. When you have discipline and a strong work ethic, nothing can stand in your way.
